The Velocity:
Adjust your velocity with a chronograph to the maximum operating pressure you are allowed at the field. Most outdoor fields allow 300 FPS, some fields require your marker to be about 275 FPS to allow for fluctuations in pressure for CO2. For indoor play some fields require a maximum of no more than 250 FPS.

The Paint:
Paintballs also play a big role in accuracy and distance. Cheap, dented, or old paint can deform when shot and cause the paintball to fly differently than the wayyou want. You should also make sure the paintballs fit your barrel correctly. Use paintballs that are not too tight in your barrel but tight enough that they lightly stay in your barrel when tilted up or down. you can buy the "iFit Barrel Boring Kit", the iFIT Kit ranges in size from .692 down to .667. This will allow you to be able to use any paint size by just adding one size to your barrel. You can also use a paintball sizer to measure what size paint you have.

Also follow the storage directions for your paintballs. If you don’t store your paintballs properly they won’t perform well. Basically, uncared for paintballs may end up breaking in your barrel, or bouncing off of your opponents without actually breaking and eliminating them, or fly off in a undesired curve. Extreme temperature conditions and humidity can also affect your paintballs performance, as the heat and humidity can make them soft and sticky and deform. To keep your paintballs in good working order you should keep them dry and cool. Buy fresh paint from your local paintball pro shop not large department stores like Wal-Mart or Canadian Tire as their paint could sit on the shelf for months.

The Barrel:
There is a lot of barrel bull shit out there. Some people will tell you that the longer the barrel the further it will shoot, this is wrong. There are barrels that you can upgrade to which will perform better than the stock barrel that came on your marker, but the only barrel that will shoot further is the flatline barrel for the Tippmann markers. This barrel puts a backspin on the ball making it go a considerable distance further but the barrel can be inaccurate at longer distance though. A barrel upgrade like a "Freak barrel kit" will improve accuracy, I would suggest something like that. Also keeping your barrel and marker clean and well oiled is a must. Debris in your barrel may break the ball or make the ball fly is a undesired direction.

Tips:
There are some internal upgrades such as the bolt, expansion chamber etc. that can make your marker perform better which will help you but won’t extend the shooting distance. Get a nice barrel for accuracy, and always use good paint for games. Now it all comes down to practice! Your paintball starts dropping due to gravity the moment it exits the barrel. Shoot up to give the ball a curve, shooting up will extend the distance and practicing this with your marker (because all markers can be different) will get you use to where the paintball will drop. So you can drop paint down on your opponents at a greater distance like in the image below. You can see players in the back position do this in some videos on Youtube, I’ll have to find a slow motion shot in a video for this article.

That’s the truth about how to shoot further.
